Grandmothers Beyond
Borders
In the village of Kassawo, Uganda, one grandmother after another gathered outside with their grandchildren--seven
grandmothers surrounded by the grandchildren in their care. Where is the middle generation?
AIDS has killed them, by the tens of thousands. The dignity of these grandmothers, the beauty of their grandchildren--in
the absence of the generation that links them.

Grandmothers Beyond Borders is a project inspired by one woman’s story, the story of Mary Namutebbe,
who represents thousands of grandmothers left alone to take care of their grandchildren
(as many as 6 to 12 children) after the children’s parents died of AIDS.

We can help Mary and other grandmothers like her.
Our goals are:
- To build a relationship with grandmothers in Uganda
- Help grandmothers send their grandchildren to school
- Reduce the rate of poverty among grandmothers supporting their
grandchildren
- Improve grandmothers' standard of living
AIDS disrupts family relationships in Uganda. It is our dream
to support grandmothers in Uganda who are raising their grandchildren
because their own children have died of AIDS.
